Back Pain
How to put an end for back pain and stiffness without painkillers, surgery or waiting to see your GP.
If you complain of lower back pain / ache, or stiffness – it’s wrong to think it’s nothing or it will resolve on its own. Or, you think you have just slept awkwardly or that it’s just a muscle spasm or a bit of stiffness that everyone your age suffers from.
Although you can’t find an obvious reason why it happened, but it doesn’t seem to be changing.
If this is your case don’t worry, you’re certainly not alone and we used to hear this complain all the time. In fact, Lower Back Pain and Sciatica is the most common problem seen in our clinic.
When it comes to living with back pain, everyone wants to know, why is this happening to me? and why it has not improved after 6 or more months of pain?
Most people believe that back pain will disappear on its own.
They expect to wake up one morning and like magic, it will be as if their back pain never happened. But 6 months later they’re still living with back pain often even worse than it was in the beginning.
Sounds Common?
Another scenario we always see at Ultimate Care Physiotherapy and Massage Clinic is when people go to their family physician, and their physician asks them to rest and take the painkillers and see how it goes.
This is not the best advice and often 6 weeks later, they go back because their condition hasn’t improved. A second doctor appointment often results in yet another prescription for stronger pain medication and more rest. This wrong act explains why so many people of all ages are suffering of chronic lower back pain.
Sounds Common?
Why does back pain stay longer than it should? Well, it’s easy to get confused with so much conflicting information out there. There is certainly lots of information, but the problem is not all of that is right. You may think your back pain was caused by doing something like wrong lifting or sleeping awkwardly but the reality could be probably caused by years and years of bad posture that made the muscles in your lower back became weak and the lifting or the awkward sleeping position was just the end result of that.
If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing wrong, back pain can be very confusing and many people just end up accepting it as part of their life, as if it’s normal and live with it.
Sounds Common?
- 1. You thought it would go away on its own, but it didn’t
- 2. After going to the doctor you were told to rest and take painkillers, but the pills did nothing to help your back. You ended up with chronic back pain.
- 3. A family member, or friend, told you that everybody gets back pain as they get older, so you just accepted it
- 4. You tried other healthcare professionals, or a physio in the past, but what they say didn’t help
- 5. Trying online / YouTube exercises and either didn’t help, or even made your back pain got worse
- 6. You thought it would be a good idea to rest because your back pain was so bad, but this made it feel even more stiff and tight
- 7. Advised to get a few massages hoping that they would fix the pain. However, all they did was feel nice and relaxing for a short period of time, but it didn’t do anything to fix your problem on long term.

What I should do to get rid of my back pain quickly?
Well here are four things you can do:
- 1. You need to decide about getting help. So many people hesitate and delay for so long, thinking that back pain will just go away with time. But after 6 months they’re still putting up with it, and nothing changed or even it gets worse.
- 2. Next, do the right exercises. One of the best things to help you ease your back pain is to do the right series of progressive exercises, the right exercises given to you by a physiotherapist will help reduce pain, allow you to move freely again in a short period of time and it will make sure that the problem doesn’t come back anytime soon (or aggravate your back even more like some exercises do).
- 3. Avoid sitting and long periods of rest, have you ever tried to get up from the sofa after resting for a while, but you struggle because your back feels so painful and tight? That’s because one of the worst things you can do that adds to back pain is rest or sit for long periods of time. Too much rest and sitting in awkward positions makes your back gets stiff and tight. It would really help if you were given appropriate strengthening exercises for better posture, alongside with hands-on treatment, to get you active and healthy as quickly as possible.
- 4. Get real hands-on Physio. Physio is proven to help people with low-back pain. In fact, at the Ultimate Care Physiotherapy and Massage Clinic, back pain is one of the most common injuries we see. If your back pain is affecting your job, your ability to keep active, if it Jeopardise your independence or gets in the way of spending quality time with family and friends. Physiotherapy can certainly help get you back to living the life you deserve as quickly as possible.

Where I should have the therapeutic massage?
At Ultimate Care Physiotherapy and Massage Clinic there is a customized treatment plan for each of our clients to return them to their ultimate health and function. Therapeutic Massage can be used at different stages of our client’s treatment plan depending on their condition. For example it can be used to prepare the muscle for the exercises by relax the muscles and reduce the tension before the exercises and for the advancement to the next level of their exercise plan as it stimulates blood flow that will help the client to have the proper muscle condition for the next level of the exercises plan. Also, it may be used to relax sore muscles after doing their exercises.
Our massage therapists have several techniques that address many issues to help calm down the client’s nervous systems in the acute phase, then provide stabilization techniques midway through their treatment plan and stimulating techniques at the end of their treatment. Once a client has finished their treatment our therapist recommend a maintenance for clients with choric conditions which is once per month and if the massage therapist notice the recurrent of the client’s problem he will refer the client back to his specialized therapist and this will prevent the onset of another injury.
