Sports Injury
All sports injury clients regardless the type of sports they are play when they get injured, they must figure out to heal, get and stay fit so they can keep enjoying their sports and being active.
If you’ve a recent sports injury or if you’ve been suffering with an injury for a while it can be very tempting to ignore it and try to adapt and live with it.
You can get very easy frustrated and end up feeling stuck, wondering if you’ll ever be able to get back to playing your sport or keeping active like you used to be before.
If this happened to you, don’t worry you are not alone we see people going through this all the time. In fact, we see people living with an injury from sports or exercise in our clinic throughout the year.
I spent over 20 years working with sports injuries and I’ve seen all the types of sport injury and I know well how to help people recover from their injuries as fast and completely as possible.
A lot of people suffering of sports injuries Always asking:
You may ask yourself, It’s been a long time since the injury, Why am I still suffering with an Injury that’s preventing me From Being Active and Playing My Favourite Sport as before?
Most people think they’ll be able to return to their sport or exercise after a few days of rest only to find when they do go back, they’re still restricted. Sometimes their condition is worse than when they were first injured. Often when you rest there is little or no pain, but as soon as you start up again, the pain returns and regardless of the amount of rest the improvement is very minimal.
Does it sound common?
Another common occurrence we see in our Physiotherapy Clinic is people who have seen their doctor, they receive the prescription of:
- Rest
- Wear a brace or support
- Pain killer
- See you in few weeks
Few weeks later clients return with minimal or no relief, then you will be told for more rest, and try another stronger pain medication.
Sport injuries like muscle strain, ankle sprains, knee injuries etc., – complete rest is not always the best advice.
With sports injuries, it’s easy to become frustrated and confused because you’ve been told different things, by different people. Maybe you think you have a back problem – but it’s your hip causing the problem. In addition, prolonged periods of rest can cause problems to other parts of your body.
The confusion over resting often prevents people from seeking out the needed treatment to repair their injury and get back to their pre- injury level of function and participation. The worse scenario, many people just give up, must believe that their days of being active are over and they will never return active and playing their favorite sport again.
If you are currently frustrated living with a sports injury, there are 7 reasons why it could be lasting more than it should be:
- 1. You thought it would go away on its own - but it didn’t
- 2. You went to the doctor who told you to rest, wear a support, and take painkillers - but the pills did nothing to help, and as soon as they wore off, your pain returned.
- 3. A family member or friend reminded you that everyone is more prone to sport injuries as they get older, so you just accepted it.
- 4. You have previously sought help from other Healthcare Professionals or a Physio, that ended with little or no results.
- 5. You’ve tried using heat pads, ice, and sport supports but they did nothing to help ease the pain or allow a return to your past abilities.
- 6. As you instructed to rest for your pain, but it still irritates you daily.
- 7. Hoping for relief you’ve tried “sport massages” but the only result was, help with relaxing but little or nothing to fix your injury long term.

What I can do to get help with my sports injury?
There are four things you can do:
- 1. First, make the decision to get help. Procrastination is your enemy. Your pain is not going to disappear on its own. lack of the right treatment will make it worse. If your desire is to get back to your sport or exercise and start enjoying a pain free life you need to pick up the phone and make the call. We will be glad to listen and help find a solution.
- 2. second, do the right exercises - one of the best things to help you recover quickly and safely from an injury is to do the right set of progressed exercises that given to you by a Physiotherapist will not only help reduce pain it will also allow freedom of movement, a return to your sport or exercise plus ensure there is a maintenance program in place to prevent the injury from reoccurring.
- 3. Third, avoid too much rest although rest is an important part of the recovery process, but too much rest won’t do anything to help you recover quickly. Many people believe that recovery means total rest from exercise. But for an injury to recover, blood flow is needed, and rest prevents this. Good recovery and strengthening exercises to heal the injury, alongside with hands on treatment, will allow for a fast recovery and get you back to living your normal life.
- 4. Fourth, get real hands on physiotherapy. Physio is proven to help people with sport injuries. Our team at Ultimate Care Physiotherapy help people recover from sport injuries all year round.
